Keto Shame! Can You Eliminate the Shame of “cheating” on Keto?

The world is embracing the Keto diet because of the fast weight loss results, health benefits, increased energy and overall general feeling of well-being. When we eat Keto we quickly fall in love with “everything keto” which includes the delicious foods, results and overall lifestyle. We feel a level of positivity we haven’t felt in awhile…if ever. Passions are awakened in us to be better, to do better and to become the best version of ourself. We become more confident and excited we’ve found a way of eating outside the Standard American Diet where we find success!

Keto has a pink cloud period that I call “Keto Heaven” and it usually lasts for several months. During this time we have great success with keto and lose weight and become encouraged and motivated to do more.

However, despite our best efforts something happens, and the weight loss starts to slow down. We think if we just keep doing what we were doing it will bounce back to where it was. Imagine the disappointment when you can’t figure out what’s wrong. Keto was working perfectly before. Now, there is a new level of frustration that’s reached that I call “Keto Hell”. Everyone at this stage wants to continue Keto but are completely baffled at what to do next. Unfortunately, this is when most people decide to cheat, give into their emotions and may give up on Keto altogether.

So, when they cheat…and we all do… they beat themselves up. They struggle to get back to Keto. Carbs and sugar start to take a hold of them like never before. It’s hard to remember that it’s normal to get frustrated on a Keto and at some point cheat by eating something that isn’t on the plan. Instead, we shame ourselves and beat ourselves up badly. Can you relate to this? Does this mean all hope is lost and now it is time to give up completely? Does this mean you failed?

Absolutely not. It is simply a sign that you need to get down to understanding the root cause of what’s going on. What triggered you? Was it frustration? Was it that you were upset over something else and it was just easier to use food to deal with it? What was really going on? And, most important, were you able to give yourself grace?

There are many ways to deal with mindset, getting past a weight loss stall or whatever else is going on with your Keto. As you address this, and it’s often emotional eating, it becomes easier to quickly move past this small blip in the road and cruise again on the open highway back to “Keto Heaven”. There is a reason that Keto is a journey. It’s not linear

Don’t be afraid of cheat days! They are not a major sin. A few cheat days aren’t going to ruin your results. Set aside your shame, allow yourself to be human, make adjustments along the way and take the time to find solutions. You can have cheat days now and then with Keto and still have peace of mind and be successful!
